DCA BIM AND IDD CAPABILITIES
WHAT IS BIM AND IDD?
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a three-dimensional modelling technology and an integrated process that allows the building professionals to explore the building project digitally, before it is built. BIM facilitates better framework among the professionals, helping to reduce unnecessary rework when the project is being constructed, improving the quality and speed of the project. BIM enables all parties in the value chain to visualize the design better, detect design problems early, and enhance planning, management and coordination for projects.
Integrated Digital Delivery (IDD) is the next step of integrating and digitalising the Built Environment Value Chain, where digital data, innovation, technology is implemented across the construction project-cycle from design, construction, fabrication to facilities management to deliver a better outcome for end user. As an architectural consultancy firm, we build on the relevant knowledge and skillsets in BIM and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), and adopt IDD as part of our transformation into a future-ready organisation. In 2018, PSA Liveable City, the new headquarters for PSA International was selected to be a BCA IDD Pilot Demonstration Project, demonstrating how project stakeholders can reap the benefits of IDD. 79 Robinson Road was awarded the BCA IDD GoldPLUS Award in the Project category in 2021.
ENHANCEMENTS THROUGH DIGITAL INNOVATIONS
As one of the leading architectural firms in Singapore to implement BIM, DCA has been at the forefront of adopting Building Information Modelling (BIM) through 3D modelling and coordination programs. This opens up the opportunity to explore exciting new technologies such as Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) with 3D virtual walkthrough features to allow all stakeholders a better understanding of the design at an early stage.
We have adopted a ‘digital design’ approach through Integrated Digital Delivery (IDD) towards all our designs by using computational tools, intelligent objects, automated code compliance checkers, 3D printing technology and virtual reality (VR). We continuously enhance our IDD workflow as we adopt new technology and cross-disciplinary integration to obtain new breakthroughs and productivity gains. Developing IDD infrastructure across the construction project-cycle to communicate and exchange information with various partners provides value and pioneers new ways to work. The end products would be future-ready, with a streamlined and integrated transition throughout the construction process.
IDD TRACK RECORD
Our IDD projects include PSA Liveable City and 79 Robinson Road.
PSA Liveable City’s entire design process up to construction is committed to efficient use of resources to achieve the project milestones on schedule. The project team used advanced info-communication technologies and smart technologies to integrate processes and stakeholders throughout all phases of the port development.
The project was selected as a pilot Integrated Digital Delivery project by BCA in 2018 to be an exemplary development that uses an integrated approach to improve sustainability by allowing for more efficient construction, by getting all stakeholders involved.
The architect team was also selected by Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority to present the project’s use of “Integrated Digital Delivery” technology at the BuildSG Leadership Forum on 7 November 2019 at The JTC Summit. Furthermore, DCA was also invited to present the project as an example of IDD from Design to FM at the BE Formation Forum in March 2020.
79 Robinson Road demonstrated how digital technologies and innovation has improved work flow and productivity, resulting in the project’s rapid progress and its timely completion despite the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 situation, through the effective and skilful implementation of IDD. BIM, VDC, and IDD processes used effectively to coordinate information for construction, conduct off-site steel prefabrication and engage stakeholders through cloud-based collaborative platforms for design coordination and downstream defects management.
Demonstrating its industry-leading qualities, the architect team was selected to present the project’s use of IDD technology to Singapore’s Ministry of National Development on 7 March 2019. Furthermore, together with Shimizu, DCA was also invited to be track speakers on "Digital Construction towards Integrated Digital Delivery of 79 Robinson Road" at the International Built Environment Conference on 4 September 2019, held in Sands Expo & Convention Centre.
BCA introduced the BCA Building Information Modelling Awards (Organization) and BCA Building Information Modelling Awards (Projects) in 2014 to recognize outstanding project teams that have implemented BIM in their projects from design to the construction stages. This was replaced with the BCA Integrated Digital Delivery (IDD) Awards in 2021.
In 2021, the prestigious office development 79 Robinson Road was recognised for its outstanding use of IDD technology and was awarded the BCA IDD GoldPLUS Award in the Project category.
Since 2014, DCA has been awarded for its outstanding implementation of digital technology to drive productivity and deliver high quality products.
